Follow these steps in order — do not skip firmware or seed backup steps.
1. Open the official setup page
On your computer, type https://trezor.io/start into the browser address bar. Verify the padlock (🔒) and that the domain is trezor.io. Avoid links from ads, emails, or social media.
2. Select your Trezor model
Choose Model T or Trezor One on the site so you download the correct firmware and instructions for your device.
3. Download Trezor Suite
Click the "Download for desktop" button and pick the installer for your OS (Windows .exe, macOS .dmg, or Linux .AppImage). Only download from suite.trezor.io or through the link provided on trezor.io/start.
4. Install & open Trezor Suite
Run the installer and open Trezor Suite. Windows users may be asked to install a driver — allow it if prompted. After opening, Trezor Suite will guide you through setup when a device is connected.
5. Connect your Trezor
Use the supplied USB cable and plug the Trezor directly into your computer (avoid hubs during setup). The device screen will show a welcome and the app will detect it.
6. Install firmware (if requested)
If the device prompts to install firmware, allow it. Firmware installation is essential — it verifies the device authenticity and applies security fixes. Do not unplug while firmware updates.
7. Create or recover your wallet
Choose Create new wallet (for a new user) or Recover wallet (if you already have a seed). The device will show your recovery seed words — write them down on the backup card that came with the box.
- Write the words by hand. Do not store them digitally (no photos, not in cloud notes).
- Consider two physical copies in separate secure locations.
- For extra durability, use a metal backup plate.
8. Set PIN & optional passphrase
Set a strong PIN on the device. A passphrase is optional and adds another layer (it creates a hidden wallet). Both are entered or confirmed via the Trezor device — never type your seed into your computer.
9. Verify operations on-device
Every transaction or account addition must be confirmed on the Trezor screen. This ensures malicious software on the computer cannot approve transfers without the physical device.
10. Maintain backups & updates
Keep your seed safe, update firmware & Trezor Suite regularly, and only download updates from the official site.
